None of the above works; the entries suggested for deletion don't appear in the registry or in the Firefox add-ons box, and the search box in Tools is greyed out. Yet Hola Search is there on the home page, and I can't get rid of it. :-(
Any further suggestions?

I think I found the answer. Clicking on Restore Firefox gave me back control of the browser and stopped the interference with my e-mail, but the real cause in this case was Babylon.toolbar, which showed up in Spybot as three entries. With those deleted, everything now works - touch wood...
